Within the games industry there are many opportunities - from small developers up to the large multinational companies that produce the blockbuster games we are all familiar with and that go on to win awards such as BAFTA's. Large games developer companies include Electronic Arts, Activision, Nintendo EAD and Sony Polyphony Digital. With companies such as these there are opportunities to move abroad to other countries such as the USA, Japan and Australia.
Games are currently being developed across a variety of platforms such as the personal computer, Sony Playstation, Nintendo Wii and Microsoft Xbox. The larger developers have dominated the traditional platforms with big budget games that have Hollywood Oscar winning movie budgets. The emergence of smaller devices such as the Apple iPhone and Google Android offers opportunities as these devices require smaller investments and have lower barriers to entry and represent opportunities for small developer companies or even individuals to produce games that sell many thousands of copies and create large profits.
The UK has a strong video games industry and has produced games such as Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto series which was the biggest selling game in the world.
With the increase in the number of animated movies such as Toy Story, Finding Nemo and more recently Avatar, it is likely that the future of this industry will require designers, programmers and animators with the necessary skills and these are likely to be chosen from talent within the games industry which has the relevant skill-sets and experience. In addition, skilled programmers, artists/animators etc., will have a set of transferrable skills, which will provide employment opportunities across a broad range of commerce and industry.
